Physical Activity in Early Childhood

Movement in early childhood and early learning centre plays a fundamental role in a child’s development. Children have boundless energy and are keen to move their bodies and explore their environment.

Physical activity is not just about exercising and burning energy with children, physical activity promotes overall growth, coordination, cognitive development and overall wellbeing.

In a digital age, it can be challenging to keep children physically active with screen time more commonly used to entertain children. Considering the many benefits of physical activity, its important to encourage children to be active and move their bodies to support ongoing development.

Benefits of physical activity:

Cognitive Development: Being physically active has shown to improve brain function, memory, and concentration. Children who are physically active tend to have better attention spans and cognitive abilities, which translates to improved performance in school.

Motor Skills: Activities such as running, jumping, skipping and climbing, strengthen children’s muscles, bones and joints and support them to develop both fine and gross motor skills. Developing motor skills supports children in completing everyday tasks.

Emotional Wellbeing: Physical activity releases energy which can lift moods, improve sleep and help reduce stress, contributing to overall wellbeing.

At Sage, we find many ways to incorporate physical activity throughout your child’s day.

-          Yoga sessions throughout the day are a great way for children to move their bodies and practice movement and stretching.

-          Outdoor play experiences in childcare encourage children to run, climb, jump and move around the space. The children love to challenge themselves on our obstacle course or ride the bikes around the yard.

-          Munch & Move in our childcare are weekly fitness sessions and promote children developing and mastering fundamental movement skills from fun active games.

-          Music and movement in the childcare classrooms or in our dedicated music space, ‘Sounds of Sage’ reinforces movement and dance as a positive form of physical activity.

-          Active group games are played with the children throughout the day at our early learning centre in Chippendale, this encouraging their social skills along with their physical development.

At Sage Early Education Centre we understand how vital movement is for your child’s development. We bring physical activity to life in fun ways promoting lifelong healthy and active lifestyles.
